NO RESERVE Forever in Fashion: Important Photographs Gifted by the Norman Parkinson Studio (Online) - Martedì 17 settembre 2019

NO RESERVE Forever in Fashion: Important Photographs Gifted by the Norman Parkinson Studio (Online)

From the East End to the West End, from Monaco to Tobago, Forum Auctions presents a dynamic collection of photographs covering British Photographer Norman Parkinson's career while he was based out of his Twickenham studio. Gifted to his former studio assistant upon the close of his London space, Angela Williams, these works have remained exclusively a part of the Angela Williams Archive until now.

Parkinson is undoubtedly one of the most important photographers in British history, having revolutionised the British fashion scene through his humorous and elegant style. His charming images captured not only the British fashion scene of Fifties and Sixties, but also the iconic faces and places that made up Swinging London; including British socialites, actors, and the theatre scene—he even became the official photographer of the British Royal family.

After establishing his London studio in 1934, he quickly became a regular contributor to Vogue Magazine, Queen Magazine and Harper's Bazaar. He went on to become one of their most important photographers. Parkinson also had a keen eye for discovering talent, including models Jerry Hall, Grace Coddington, and Nena von Schlebrügge. The latter is the subject of three important lots in the present sale, which feature her first test shots as a young model (Lots 13, 14, 15). Von Schlebrügge, actor Uma Thurman's mother, was first spotted by Parkinson as a teenager in Stockholm and shortly thereafter moved to London to pursue her career. In these images, Von Schlebrügge displays her fresh-faced elegance and striking beauty that went on to skyrocket her to fame.

Provenance: At the age of twenty-one, aspiring photographer Angela Williams was introduced to the eminent fashion photographer Norman Parkinson. This meeting went well and she soon became his assistant, developing a collaborative and close working relationship with Parkinson during the 1960s. When the time came for Parkinson to downsize from his Twickenham studio in London, Williams was there to help him sort his possessions. As a thank you, the photographer agreed to gift her his working vintage prints. Williams went on to spend over two decades curating and researching these rare silver prints, now known cumulatively as ‘The Angela Williams Archive'. This sale marks their first presentation to market.

Lots 1-121 The English as Collectors: a Documentary Library
The Property of the late Frank Herrmann (1927-2017), author, publisher, collector and mentor to many at Forum Auctions

Frank Herrmann (1927-2017)

Frank Herrmann Educated at Westminster School and Magdalen College, Oxford, Frank Herrmann spent much of his working life in book publishing, starting as a designer at Faber & Faber's in the late 1950s. He spent 15 years at Methuen's, later Associated Book Publishers, and then built up the publishing group Marshall Morgan & Scott.

Together with his wife Patricia, Frank Herrmann amassed a collection of English Delftware, and later other ceramics, including 18th and 19th century dinner services. He was always interested in the art market and the auction world, and specifically in the history of collecting, and in the late 1960s wrote five articles for The Connoisseur on the collector Edmund Solly. He went on to write two major books in these areas: The English as Collectors: A Documentary Chrestomathy (1972, revised in 1999 and subsequently reprinted) and Sotheby's: Portrait of an Auction House (1980). In 1982 he became director in charge of European overseas operations at Sotheby's, but left to found his own auction house, Bloomsbury Book Auctions, from which he retired in 2000. In the course of his authorship he acquired many books and papers on the history of collecting, some of which are in the Wallace Collection and the remainder retained in his personal archives.

He also wrote a series of children's books about the Giant Alexander that sold more than 600,000 copies and were translated into many languages. His autobiography, Low Profile: A Life in the World of Books, appeared in 2002.
